CONCRETE FIRE PIT

This week’s post comes just in time for the upcoming holiday weekend. It’s an easy project (even for beginners!) with very few materials needed and if you build one now you can enjoy it all summer long. We built this fire pit on our patio when we first purchased our home and it was a great addition to the backyard. We built ours on a concrete slab but you could easily create a flat patch of dirt to make this on a grass area as well! Another cool part about this DIY is you can make the pit whatever size fits your space the best. You’ll just adjust the number of concrete blocks you use to make it bigger or smaller.

List of Materials:

We started by creating a circle for the base with 10 blocks to start the shape of the pit and to make sure we had the location on the patio exactly where we wanted it. Next we arranged 10 more blocks on top of the base for the second row. This row’s blocks will roughly center on the seams from the first layer. This takes some adjusting to get the shape as close to round as possible so it’s best to get the placement right before securing.

Once we had the placement, we used the caulk gun and the adhesive to secure the second row of blocks to the top of the first row.

We continued the same process to add the 3rd and 4th row of blocks and added the bag of sand to the bottom of the inside. This is to keep a barrier between the fire and your concrete or grass area.

The best part of this is that if you ever decide to remove it (we upgraded to a gas fire pit after a few summers when we built our pergola), it’s a piece of cake and it won’t leave a mark. We used a crowbar to break apart the blocks, scraped off the adhesive and resold them on Facebook marketplace. By the time we swept up the ash and sand, you could barely tell the pit was ever there other than it being the only clean part of the concrete after the winter months. You can see below what it looked like immediately after removal. Once we power washed the rest of the patio it was like it was never there!

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy long weekend!
